Subject: Roundabout Education PSA Contest

Hello everyone,

I am sharing with you a PSA (public service announcement) challenge I had for some local high school media students (Saline H.S., Michigan) this past spring. Many of us in this group know yielding is a major issue with crashes at roundabouts. There are many videos that exist on the internet about how to drive a roundabout. Many of those videos are well done. However, I am of the opinion most of them are too long. 'Studies' have shown the average attention span of an adult is 8 seconds (I have no idea how credible the study was concerning the exact number, but I agree with the premise of the original theory), in part due to smart phones. What I really wanted to see was a 30 or 60 second PSA that was devoted entirely to yielding at roundabouts in hopes we could reduce crashes. So I went to Saline High School with my challenge. Frankly I was not expecting a lot, but I figured I had nothing to lose. If I was lucky I may get one decent video to share. The kids pleasantly surprised me with their products. There were a total of 8 PSA submittals. A group of us at my employer (Road Commission) rated the videos to determine a winner. Each person from the winning group received $50 gift cards from Best Buy. We also landed what I feel is a really cool slogan from the contest: Yield is Your Shield. I decided to take the moto and mock up the logo below. I am still trying to figure out how to brand it.

I share this information with you because I am of the opinion young minds can be a tremendous asset to solve problems. And it does not have to come at a great expense (sorry consultants out there :)). I am in the process of making presentations locally with various groups of all ages (libraries, Rotary Clubs, etc.) concerning roundabout education in hopes to bring awareness to yielding at roundabouts. I have done two presentation thus far, Both have gone very well. If you have suggestions for education ideas, I am all ears (as a group or offline). Thanks.
