Subject: State Roundabout Laws and Driver Education Curriculum

Over the past couple of weeks in my spare time, I've been researching and compiling the list of state motor vehicle laws that apply to roundabouts directly (if any) and also the state driver education curriculum that specifically mentioned roundabouts (if any).  I finished this past weekend and from my observations I can report the following:

  *   Out of all 50 states, I only found 11 (Alaska, Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Montana, New York, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin) that have references specifically to roundabouts in their state statutes or code.  The majority of the others use the standard language for rotaries which I believe was part of the Uniform Vehicle Code years ago.

  *   California, Idaho, Kentucky, Missouri, New Jersey and South Dakota have no state laws that reference any circular intersection operations that I could find.

  *   I also found 35 states that have some sort of required driver education curriculum and out of those 35, only 6 (Arizona, Kansas, Maryland, New York, North Dakota and Oregon) have a reference to roundabouts directly.  Interestingly, the number of states that have required curriculum is more than the number of states that actually require driver education to get a learner's permit or license.

  *   I've linked both the applicable laws and the driver education curriculum for those states that had it available in the spreadsheet (for Arizona however, you'll have to edit the hyperlink in the cell for their curriculum and then cut and paste the URL into your browser for some reason).

If anyone finds any errors or omissions to the current data, just let me know.  Also, it would be great if the Listserv members in those states listed as "Unknown" for roundabout curriculum could track down the driver education curriculum requirements (if any) and get back to me so I can update the spreadsheet.  Thanks!
