UW-Madison Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory (TOPS lab) has conducted a safety analysis for WisDOT, completed in September 2011. The safety analysis included 3 years before-after data on 24 roundabouts constructed 2004 - 2007. If someone would like a copy of that analysis they may contact Andrea Bill at UW-Madison or I could send the 3 page summary or the 117 report..

Office of Safety

Approximately 19 percent of the U.S. population lived in rural areas in 2010, yet rural fatalities accounted for 55 percent or 18,026 of all traffic fatalities in 2010. When the vehicle miles traveled are factored in, the fatality rate on these roads, 1.85, is 2.5 times higher than on urban roads As FHWA works toward significantly reducing fatalities and serious injuries on all roadways, we are committed to comprehensively addressing rural road safety issues. We will continue to work closely with locally focused organizations and practitioners to develop tools and resources for these road owners so they have access to the road safety information, knowledge, and resources needed to address safety issues in their jurisdictions.

It is imperative that local and rural highway practitioners routinely integrate safety into their projects and programs and several local agencies are making large strides in these areas. This edition of the Safety Compass is focused on local and rural road safety information and highlights some noteworthy practices occurring in select jurisdictions. [ and features roundabouts - my comment] Roundabouts Improve Safety on Rural Roadways
