Kent, I've corrected the ID for your Idaho Falls rbt center sculpture ... it

impressively says "Idaho Falls" ... You say it's been there a few years and

if not blamed for an accident, seems roundabout traffic would be moving slow

enough to allow an eye-contact wave to take a picture much like the

jaywalking no-harm-foul that goes on at Sarasota roundabouts ... wish they

wouldn't but that's what some people do, just sayin.  Worrying City

officials here planted shrubs around the perimeter as "barrier" with little

effect -- no pedestrian has been hurt, not before shurbing and not after --

pictures still are taken and a homeless guy (eye contact wave in play) walks

over onto a truck apron from time to time and sits down to catch some rays,

sort his backpack, and do some car and people watching ... a no-harm foul.

One day I took a picture of him, attached.

With your ID fix and other notable roundabout centers that showed up,

www.SarasotaConnectivity.com now displays 36 roundabout locations that make

more of roundabout centers than just some turf.

Subject: Large-Tall Center Island Artwork

We've been asked to review/approve a sculpture for the center of a new

roundabout in front of a high school.  The sculpture consists of a 30'

tall 12" diameter pole with large stylized letters on it (we think,

representing the school, not really my cup of tea regarding the

aesthetics.)  I don't have a good pictorial representation of it yet.

The base is proposed to be about 8'x8'.  It appears to be outside any

clear zone requirements (see attached diagram), so other than somebody

completely missing the roundabout deflection, it shouldn't be a crash

problem.  However, we're concerned about the size, in particular the

height, and also that the sculpture may be too shiny/reflective and

cause a distraction. And the height might be out of scale with the

location.

Comments or examples/pictures of similar sculptures would be welcome.

The  artwork in the center island of one of Bend's most recently

constructed roundabouts is a 39' metal sculpture. More information and

pictures, although not very good ones, can be found in the following

The roundabout in Rod's slides show labeled Boise, Idaho is actually located in eastern Idaho, here in Idaho Falls.  People love the artwork and I frequently hear positive comments about it (and negative comments about the roundabout geometry, but that's another story).  The problem I have with the artwork is that people seem to like it too much.  I frequently see people out in the central island having pictures taken of themselves with the art.  It's not uncommon to see whole families out there.  Of course, they have to cross the circulatory roadway to get there, which concerns me greatly.  We recently replaced a traffic signal with another roundabout downtown and I refused requests for artwork in the central island because of my concerns about what's going on at the other location.  How are others dealing with that issue?

Love the one from France -- great find!  We could learn a few things from them regarding signs (less is best).  "If ya need signs, redesign".

Great links. Thank you!!! ..I'll share the links with our US41Momentum team and the civic leaders here.

& here's a collection of USA roundabout centers to demonstrate them as "context sensitive signature ID icons" ...

Was prepared to show the City powers the potential of the centers while poking at where they could have been better so close to downtown Sarasota..

City Commission got the point and directed staff to come back with a roundabout center "template"  (height above  grade, electric, lighting, etc) so public/private interests will have basic specs to "claim" the ten planned

US41 multi-lane roundabout centers (eight funded and in FDOT work plan).
